Book Review: Girl With a Pearl Earring

So, I finished another book! One day.  I’m on a one day rampage!
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Girl With a Pearl Earring is everything the cover reviews say.  Dramatic and definitely sensual, this novel is the fictitious story of the young girl in Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer’s piece, Girl With a Pearl Earring. Griet is sent to the Vermeer household to earn some extra money for her family after her father lost his eyesight.  Griet’s humble job as maid quickly becomes complicated.
Turning eighteen is hard enough for Griet without the added influence of him. Waiting for Pieter the son, “him”, or van Ruijven to make their move was surprisingly suspenseful. With three men showing interest in her, how is a lowly maid supposed to know who she is or who she wants to be?
I read the novel quickly, concerned with Griet’s well-being.  The most alluring aspect of the novel was Griet’s development.  Waiting for her to make a decision or stand up for herself was very important to the novel.  The 1600s were no place I’d want to be, but reading about Griet’s experience, through fiction, was very interesting.
