Book Review: Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children

I finally read it! So now I suppose I am obligated to do homework or something.

Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar ChildrenMiss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Ransom Riggs peculiar little book is highly creative: a mix of gifted children, reminiscent of the X-men mutants, with a little bit of Emerson “soul-searching” crafted together for a fun read.  It has a little bit of everything.

I almost put 3 stars, but I couldn’t lie. I loved this story. If I had known that this novel intertwined vintage photography within the plot, I would have bought it sooner.  I had been waiting for a used copy to come along, but last week I was in Walmart, saw the cover, and just knew I had to have it then.

As a started reading, I realized that the story was also tied to WWII, and I became even more excited.  I loved me some historical-fiction was I was in middle school.

I was surprised that this novel got several nasty reviews.  I was into from the early on, just remember that this is Young Adult Lit! The beginning half is mostly character development.  Jacob is a teen going through some wild stuff, and the action takes awhile to get into.  Still, I thought the story was excellently put together: mystery, murder, fantasy all mixed together for a dark but redemptive story.  I would have to agree that if you like Harry Potter, then you would enjoy Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children.
